Bible Study on 1 Thessalonians

"Loving, living and longing."

Study 3 : The Church and the Plan of Salvation (b) 1 Thess. 1:1-10

1. Election by God v4.

Salvation begins with God.

2. Effectiveness of the Gospel v5

It is the power of God to salvation.

3. Evidence of Grace v3,6-9.

Worshipping, working, walking, witnessing and waiting.

4. Evangelism of the Godless v8.

(a) A church facing up to its responsibility - to preach the Gospel.
Note v5 "to you" and v8 "from you". See v5 "Our gospel"

(b) A church with a resounding message - sounded forth v 8.
What sounded forth? - the Word, not signs and wonders.

(c) A church with a reputation - v8b " faith .. known everywhere" What are we noted for? Is it our faith?

(d) A church that reached far out - to all of Greece and beyond.
"The light that shines farthest, shines brightest at home"

5. Expectation of Glory v10.

We are to live in the light of Christ's coming;
Along with expectancy, there is an expectation.

(a) Waiting and service. see v9,10. "You turned to God .. to serve ... and to wait .." No idleness in waiting.
see Luke 19:13; 1Tim. 6:11-14; Titus 2:11-13

(b) Waiting and scrutiny see v9,10 ".. they ... declare .. how you turned .. to serve ... and to wait. The world watches to see how we practice what we preach. Do we wait expectantly?

(c) Waiting and salvation v10. "delivers us from wrath to come"

"That will be glory for me"

6. Exclusiveness of the Group v2.

(a) Whole church was saved v2-4.

(b) Whole church was to serve 5:27.
