Their Problem and Ours

Caleb and the problem of fear

Numbers 13,&14. Deuteronomy 1; Joshua 14 & 15; Judges 1.

We are all familiar with the painful emotion of fear. There is Healthy fear, there is holy fear but what we are examining tonight is Harmful fear. The Lord understands us; He knows our fears but He says to us "Fear not". The story of Caleb demonstrates how fear can be defeated.

 

1. Fear brings failure

  • (a) they were afraid to take on the enemy
  • (b) they were afraid to trust in the Lord.

 

2. Fear blindfolds faith.

  • (a) it blinds us to the promises of God. Deut. 1:8
  • (b) it blinds us to the past. Deut.31:30-32.
  • (c) it blinds us to the proofs of God's blessing Num. 13:23.
  • (d) it blinds us to the presence of God Num. 14:9b.
  • (e) it blinds us to the pleadings of God's servants. Num 14:7-9.

3. Faith banishes fear.

  • (a) the fear of warfare. Joshua 14:10 The lord kept him alive.
  • (b) The fear of weighty responsibiliry. Num. 13:30
  • (c) the fear of waiting. Joshua 14:7-12 Judges

4. Faith brings victory

  • (a) followed the Lord... Num. 14:24; 32:12.Deut. 1:36; Joshua 14:8,9,14.
  • (b) Filled by the Lord... Num. 14:24
