Meet God in the Psalms

 The God who Lifts - Psalm 42 & 43

There are many reasons for depression, including - Suffering (emotional or physical or by enemies); Sin (and guilt); Sorrow; Shame (seeing self as a failure or as useless); Satanic.

1. How the depressed man Laments

(a) Dryness 42v1,2

(e) Death 42v9; 43v10

(b) Distress 42v3

(f) Destruction 42v10

(c) Darkness 42v3,10; 43v3

(g) Disfigured 42v11

(d) Drowning 42v7

 

 

 

2. Why the depressed man is Low

Preoccupied with his personal life - 50+ personal pronouns

Preoccupied with his past life - v4 "when I remember.."

Preoccupied with his problems in life - "my enemies"

Preoccupied with the puzzles of life - ten times "Why?"

 

3. Where the depressed man must Look

(a) God who satisfies v1b,2a.

(e) God who lives 42v2

(b) God, my exceeding joy 43v4

(f) God my salvation v5,v11,v5

(c) God of light and truth 43v3

(g) God's face v5,v11,v5

(d) God my Rock 42v9

 

God is the answer to all our need

 

4. How the depressed man is Lifted

(a) Wanting - he wants the Lord to lift him 42v1

(b) Word - he needs the Truth to lead him 43v3

(c) Worship - he longs for people, praise and prayer

(d) Walk - he yearns for a personal relationship with God

(e) Waiting - he is prepared to wait for God .. the "yet" of faith
