Meet God in the Psalms

The God who Pardons   Psalm 51

King David has grievously sinned with Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11 & 12) and the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. (11:27). Nathan came to say "You are the man." (12:7) and he heard the response from David, "I have sinned against the Lord" (12:13) . From those events David wrote Psalm 51 to show us how terrible our sin is but also to tell us that we have a God who abundantly pardons.

1. His Pain

  • Blackness -David is defiled and needs to be washed. v2,7,10.
  • Brokenness -Broken by God v8. He was broken-hearted v17
  • Barrenness -No joy. v8,12. no witness v13-15.
  • Bloodguiltiness -His sin was ever before him v3, and he longed for deliverance. v14.


2. His Penitence

  • His agreement with God about sin.

Transgression / rebellion v1,3.

Iniquity / crookedness v2,5,9.

Sin / failure, error, missing the mark v2,3 4,5 9.

evil / bad v4.

  • His admission of his guilt. Guilty conscience v3.
  • His awareness of its gravity God sees it all v4
  • His alarm at sin's grip The root of sin lies deep v5.

Having grasped the horror of his sin, he turns to God.


3. His Prayer

  • See where he commences
  • See what he craves

Pardon Is.55:7.

Power v11.

Praise v12.

  • See his confidence v7 "I shall be..." v6 "You shall.. "
